Royal RegaliaRegalia is the name given to the emblems of visible marks of royalty, which, from Biblical times, have been used during the religious ceremonies marking the accessions of kings and emperors to their high position of state. Such religious ceremonies have fallen into disuse in many of the countries where they were formerly practised; but in the United Kingdom they still take place, and during the last coronations ceremony Queen Elizabeth II was invested with regalia as her ancestors had been invested from the days of the Norman conquest and before. Almost the whole of the present regalia was made for the coronation of King Charles II or subsequent coronations. Since the coronation of King Charles II the regalia have been kept in the Tower of London under the guardianship of the Keeper of the Jewel House, appointed by the Lord Chamberlain , except when are required for the coronation ceremony. At these times they are delivered on the eve of the coronation into the hands of the Dean of Westminster and placed in the Jerusalem Chapel of Westminster Abbey, where they are watched throughout the night by the Yeomen of the Guard and others. On the following morning they are taken in procession by the Dean and Chapter, accompanied by the Queen's Scholars of Westminster School and by the choirs of Westminster Abbey and of the Chapel Royal of St James's, from the Jerusalem Chapel to the Confessor's Chapel, and St Edward's Crown is laid upon the altar. The rest of regalia is then taken to the west end of the Abbey and subsequently handed to those who are appointed to carry it in the Sovereign's procession.
