The Swords
The Swords: After the Spurs have been returned to the altar, the Archbishop of Canterbury takes the Jewelled State Sword from the Keeper of the Jewel House and, accompanied by the Archbishop of York and the Bishops of London and Winchester and other bishops assisting, he approaches the Sovereign and delivers the Sword into his or her right hand. The Sword is then girt about the Sovereign (a Queen Regnant is not actually girt with the Sword) accompanied by this exhortation: "With this sword do justice, stop the growth of iniquity, protect the Holy Church of God, help to defend widows and orphans, restore the things that are gone to decay, maintain the things that are restored, punish and reform what is amiss and con¬firm what is in good order: that doing these things you may be glori¬ous in all virtue; and so faithfully serve our Lord Jesus Christ in this life that you may reign for ever with Him in the life which is to come". The Sword is then ungirted and handed to the Archbishop of Canterbury by the Sovereign himself, who shows by this act that he places his Sword at the service of the Church. It is then redeemed for one hundred shillings and carried naked before the Sovereign for the rest of the ceremony.
