The Jewelled State Sword

The Jewelled State Sword was made for the coronation of King George IV and is the most elaborate and brilliant of the various Swords which belong to the regalia. The cross of the hilt is adorned with an emerald; the grip is a mass of diamonds which are set in designs forming oak leaves and acorns. At the head of the hilt is a large diamond, which has rubies on its four sides, and below these are two rows of diamonds and emeralds. The quillon is so encrusted with small diamonds that the gold beneath can scarcely be seen. The blade is of Damascus steel of the finest temper. The scabbard is also thickly set with gems — diamonds, rubies and emaralds depicting the Rose of England, the Thistle of Scotland and the Shamrock of Ireland. At the bottom of the scabbard is a large turquoise set around with diamonds.

The four other Swords of the regalia — the great Sword of State, the two Swords of Justice and the Sword of Mercy — are not presented to the Sovereign, but have been carried in the procession since the coronation of King Richard I in 1189.
